Costuming the Vanguard Crew

We cannot begin a discussion of the costumes of the Vanguard without pointing you to visit Marc Pasquin’s vexillogical website. Marc Pasquin is a colleague of mine from the Ill Bethisad project who very kindly created the uniforms for the Vanguard crew. The designs above are largely his.

Let’s speak to each set. For the High Ranks Marc originally suggested the costuming of the captain and first officer. I extrapolated from those the uniforms of the Admiral and Counter-Admiral uniforms. You’ll note that both Captain Spitzer and Marie Bouc’s uniforms are varied from the appearance as Marc originally drew them, but you can also see that there are a great number of similarities.

Mistelsbog’s uniforms are an extrapolation of the medic uniform, however, as you’ve noticed, his uniform aboard the ship thus far have not looked a lot like the uniform. But that’s a part of the creative process. Mistelsbog’s uniform looks a great deal more like an initial concept I had for a generic Yrgoan costume. Cannon liked it a great deal and has made it his standard-fare…at least, as far as we’ve seen him in the current day aboard ship.

Officers and Junior Officers: As you can see there are very much similar appearances between the officers and junior officers. You will note, however, that there are some difference. Doctor Rasmussen’s outfit is very different, and he doesn’t wear the hat – at least, on the bridge. Aquico’s outfit is decidedly not as reserved as that which was suggested by Marc.

Cannon and I have both felt that Captain Spitzer’s command has a bit more leeway than other ships as far as the day to day wear aboard the bridge. We have yet to meet the under crew, but that will come up on next Tuesday when we see some of the mechanics who work under Jimmy’s command.

Lastly, we have the Starmada Spacesuits. These are decidedly mine – but with ideas drawn from Marc’s work, shown in the commanding officer’s shoulder swatches and the watchman’s armor-plate. We won’t see these just yet, but we’ll be seeing those down the road.

And that’s the overview of our original imaginings of the costumes of the crew. I hope you’ve enjoyed the peek!

I like this kind of thoughtfulness.
